Chef Jeremy Hansen: Fast Facts
It’s the culinary equivalent of an atomic bomb exploding in the city.
Chef/Owner Jeremy Hansen of Santé in Spokane is a semifinalist for a James Beard Award.
In other words, the James Beard Awards are the Oscars and someone from Spokane is on the shortlist for Best Actor. Now our neighbors in Seattle and Portland are no stranger to James Beard Award nominations (70% of semifinalists are from either city, and they’ve won 100% of past awards), but for us in Spokane, it’s like we’ve made it to second base with the hottest girl in school, and we (see: me) are freaking out.
So for those in Portland & Seattle that don’t know anything about the guy, here are some fast facts:

- Went to Le Cordon Bleu in Portland
- Moved to NY to work under Michelin Star Chef Gray Kunz at Café Gray
- Opened Santé in Spokane with wife Kate in 2009
- Opened Butcher Bar craft cocktail bar in 2014
- Invited to cook at the James Beard House in 2014

Little known fact: back in 2012, when people openly criticized him and his restaurant for serving foie gras, HE HELD AN OPEN TOWN HALL DISCUSSION TO DISCUSS ETHICAL EATING. Seriously.
This nomination shouldn’t be underestimated. It tells people that the culinary scene in Spokane is on the rise, and we have a world class chef that is pushing the limits of culinary innovation and creativity. It’s also a challenge to other local chefs and restaurants in the area to step up and challenge the culinary boundaries within the city. Seriously.
In other words: SHIT JUST GOT REAL.
